Claude Varlan is born in 1940. He visits the École des Métiers d’Art in Paris, next he is working in various workshops, f.e. with André Normand in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, with Palley and with Coville. In 1974 he sets up his first own studio in Chaillac, together with Brigitte Pénicaud. Later a new studio is set up in Places (North in the Limousin). Since about 2000 he stopped. His woodfired vessels are always decorated with paint. In the beginning in a Japonistic style, later in all kind of decorations in an improvised style, always surprising. This decoration is both with engobes and glazes.
