Now in trust, it was formerly housed in West London but is now on long term loan to York Art Gallery.We are delighted to announce that the domestic setting for the Collection is now open to visitors, as part of the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) at the art gallery. Designed by Martin Smith, the space now has a second selection from the holding made by Tessa Peters. We hope visitors will enjoy exploring the cross-section of work, taking advantage of Martin Smith’s specially commissioned bench.
THE ANTHONY SHAW SPACE
Anthony Shaw has been collecting art for over 40 years. His collection is now on long term loan to York Museums Trust. Shaw is particularly drawn to work that explores the sculptural and painterly qualities of clay. In the first display of his collection in York, which opened on 1 August 2015, Shaw selected a variety of work by an array of artists. These included sculptural pieces by Gordon Baldwin and Ewen Henderson, figurative mixed media work by Kerry Jameson, and functional ceramics by Jim Malone. Shaw has always felt that his collection is most at home in a domestic environment, and worked with the ceramist Martin Smith to develop a domestic-style space in which to show his collection. Taking the form of two rooms, Shaw placed his objects on furniture, between books on shelves, and in front of paintings, inviting visitors into the space to share the experience of living with a collection.
